Leo Burnett

Advertising agency Leo Burnett were looking to improve collaboration and creativity and recognised that the way they occupied their converted warehouse space was contributing to the feeling of disjointedness within the organisation. We approached the problem by conducting a methodical analysis of both their working practices and physical working environment using a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods: from software analysis of their building floor plan, organisational network analysis and occupancy studies to interviews with key stakeholders and a full staff survey.

Ogilvy

Spacelab have been working with the global advertising agency Ogilvy to find ways to maximise the potential of their 100,000 sqft London office space. Continued growth means that there is a risk of reaching capacity before the lease expires. At the same time they are looking to take a step towards more flexible and collaborative ways of working which they can fully introduce when they re-locate in three years time. We conducted a detailed analysis of how the current space is used, including occupancy studies, accommodation analysis and computer modeling of the potential of the overall building to enable natural meeting points and thoroughfares together with areas for quieter concentrated work.

Mediacom

Mediacom had relocated from 6 separate sites into a single multi-floor office space but were concerned that the benefits of co-location were not being realised and teams were still operating independently and collaboration was minimal. Spacelab undertook an extensive observation study of the movement and occupancy patterns of people and how they were interacting within the building in addition to interviewing a representative sample of staff to understand their first hand experience of working in the space. We also analysed the organisational network of the business to understand which teams were communicating and interacting with each other and how that might be being disrupted by the building configuration.

Bindmans LLP

London based law firm Bindmans LLP had outgrown its office space and needed to re-locate to something larger. Spacelab have been helping them define their property search requirements. We started by undertaking an intensive study of their existing workspace involving a staff survey and organisation network analysis; spatial and accommodation analysis and an occupancy study which enabled us to generate hard evidence to show how the legal and support staff had been using the space. It also gave us the data from which we could define appropriate space standards for the new office and to recommend property options that would efficiently accommodate future headcount growth and create a fit for purpose working environment.

RCN

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) had a need to relocate 40 staff into its London HQ which highlighted issues about how the space was organised, which made it inefficient, inflexible and incapable of meeting the needs of staff, members and external visitors. We carried out research including studying the occupancy levels of work areas, meeting rooms and the library; analysing meeting room bookings; interviewing all Heads of Departments about working cultures and the relationships between teams; an online staff questionnaire on work processes and interaction patterns, to get a better understanding of the RCN and its building so that we could offer a tailor-made, long-term strategy.
